The post-war years were tough for Germany suffering the burden of significant reparations to the victorious countries and hyper-inflation. Mussolini had assumed power in Italy with plans to restore Italy to the status enjoyed by the Roman Empire. The First World War had been called the ‘war to end all wars’ but by the 1930s tension throughout the world was becoming increasingly dangerous. The Left Book Club Theatre Guild is affiliated to it. It boasted its own theatre building, committee structure, club membership and hectic social and recreational life. Unity Theatre, inaugurated in 1935, attempted to become the single focus for socialist theatre, aiming to go beyond agitprop. ![]()
